Why Food Banks and Community Food Projects Partner With Your Local Pantry
Many of our partner organisations already have experience in the community food sector - from running food banks and community fridges to hosting community meals. By partnering with Your Local Pantry, they’ve been able to build on that experience and offer something new to their communities.
A dignified approach to accessing food
Pantries give members the freedom to choose their own food in a welcoming, shop-like setting. Because membership costs just a few pounds a week, the experience feels more like shopping than receiving charity. This small contribution fosters a sense of ownership, independence and confidence, helping people feel in control of how they feed themselves and their families.
Complementary to existing food support
Many organisations add a Pantry alongside their existing food bank or project. This creates a natural pathway from emergency help to longer-term stability. A Pantry can also be a springboard for introducing budgeting, meal planning and other life-skills initiatives, as well as providing a greater variety of healthy food.
Some partners have also found that opening a Pantry helps reduce demand on their food bank, as members gain a more consistent and sustainable way of accessing food. We’ve seen this across the network, with examples of food banks reporting fewer repeat visits once a Pantry is established.
Financial and operational sustainability
Some organisations have chosen to replace their food bank operations entirely with a Pantry model, because it offers a more sustainable way of running community food provision. Membership fees and supplier partnerships make it easier to plan ahead and keep the service going in the long term.
Support to ‘go beyond food’
Your Local Pantry is about more than just food. Pantries often become hubs for wider support, connecting members with advice, training, volunteering and other local services. This strengthens the whole community and helps people build resilience.
Tools to manage and understand your impact
Many organisations are drawn to Your Local Pantry not only for the model itself but also for the powerful tools that come with it. Our Pantry Portal software makes it easy to track visits, payments and membership applications, while generating clear reports on your local impact. This helps you plan better, evidence your outcomes for funders and partners, and understand how your service is changing lives in your community.
Learn from those who’ve gone before you
If you’re considering setting up a Pantry, we can introduce you to network members who have made the transition from food banks themselves. They’ll share their learning, experience and practical tips to help you every step of the way.
